The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced it will begin detaining and seizing hoverboards that don’t meet the requirements of a new UL standard for self-balancing scooters, it said in a letter to importers of the product (here). The agency said it has received 52 reports since the beginning of December of hoverboards catching on fire, causing over $2 million in damage, including the destruction of two homes and an automobile. CPSC field staff will consider hoverboards that do not meet the new standards to be defective, and possibly a substantial product hazard or imminent hazard, it said. UL only issued the new standard, UL 2272 (“Outline of Investigation for Electrical Systems for Self-balancing Scooters”), at the beginning of February (here), and began accepting requests for product testing and certification at that time.
