Senators Propose Adding Hesai to Treasury's NS-CMIC List
Three Republican senators urged the Treasury Department Sept. 11 to place Chinese lidar company Hesai Technology on the Non-SDN Chinese Military-Industrial Complex Companies List (NS-CMIC List), which would restrict the firm’s access to U.S. public investment, including stocks.
The letter cites "clear evidence" that Hesai’s products are used in Chinese military combat vehicles, as well as surveillance systems used to repress Uyghur Muslims in the Xinjiang region. The senators said Treasury "should begin to immediately take steps to add Hesai to the NS-CMIC List."
The letter, which also calls on the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to remove Hesai from the Nasdaq stock exchange, is signed by Sens. Rick Scott of Florida; Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee; and Bernie Moreno of Ohio. Treasury and Hesai had no immediate comment on the letter, which is copied to Acting National Security Adviser Marco Rubio and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard.
The letter comes about two months after the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia upheld the addition of Hesai to the Defense Department's 1260H list of Chinese military companies (see 2507140061). Hesai is appealing the decision to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.
