House Foreign Affairs Democrats See US Chip Export Policy as 'Inconsistent'

Democrats on the House Foreign Affairs Committee accused the Trump administration Aug. 25 of taking what they see as a conflicting approach to export controls for computing chips.

Allowing Nvidia to sell advanced AI chips to China while restricting Intel’s sale of “legacy laptop chips” to that country is an “inconsistent use of export controls,” the lawmakers wrote on X.

The tweet did not elaborate on the Intel restrictions but came less than a month after the committee’s top Democrat, Rep. Gregory Meeks of New York, criticized the administration's decision to allow Nvidia to sell H20 AI chips to China (see 2507300030). In a joint letter to the Commerce Department in late July, Meeks accused the administration of using H20 restrictions as a "bargaining chip" in trade talks with Beijing.
