Senator Hopes Trade Deal With EU Will Remove Barriers to US Peanut Exports

Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., said Aug. 19 he is optimistic the Trump administration’s new trade deal with the EU will help peanut farmers in his state increase their exports to Europe.

“Unfortunately, U.S. peanut producers are still fighting an uphill battle because of inaccurate and burdensome phytosanitary and inspection regulations,” Tuberville said in an e-mailed statement. “Our domestic producers deserve better.”

The trade deal, announced in July, calls, among other things, for the two sides to work together to address non-tariff barriers to U.S. agricultural exports (see 2507280027). Tuberville urged the administration in April to address non-tariff barriers to U.S. peanut exports (see 2504300040).
