Three Lawmakers From Gulf States Introduce Safer Shrimp Imports Act

A bill that would require the FDA to "significantly increase testing of imported shrimp and publicly report inspection results" was introduced this week by Reps. Mike Ezell, R-Miss., Julia Letlow, R-La., and Troy Carter, D-La.

"Our local gulf coast shrimpers are playing by the rules while foreign producers are flooding the market with unsafe, low-quality products," Ezell said in a press release.

The bill requires foreign countries to establish FDA-level oversight of these facilities, or have their shrimp exports banned.
