Bessent Confirmed as Treasury Secretary

The Senate voted 68-29 late Jan. 27 to confirm hedge fund manager Scott Bessent as treasury secretary.

Fifty-two Republicans, 15 Democrats and one independent supported Bessent, while 28 Democrats and one independent opposed him. Three senators didn’t vote, including Sen. Tim Sheehy, R-Mont., who would have backed Bessent had his flight to Washington not been delayed, a Sheehy spokesperson said.

The Senate action came less than a week after the Senate Finance Committee advanced Bessent’s nomination (see 2501210021).
