Bipartisan Group of House Members Ask for Briefing on Corn Dispute With Mexico

House Ways and Means Committee members Rep. Randy Feenstra, R-Iowa, and Rep. Dan Kildee, D-Mich., led some fellow committee members and other House members in asking U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai to brief them on the status of the dispute over Mexico's policy on genetically modified corn, and how that might affect the 2026 review of the USMCA.

The 21 members, in an Oct. 1 letter, said they saw that the new Mexican agriculture secretary said the country will not seek to reduce yellow corn imports, but the ban on GMO corn used in tortillas is still in place. They noted that the biggest ag export to Mexico last year was corn, about $5 billion worth. More than 90% of U.S. corn is genetically modified.
