State Dept. Drafts ITAR Exemption Rule for AUKUS

The State Department has drafted a proposed rule that could create a new exemption in the International Traffic in Arms Regulations for “defense trade and cooperation” with Australia and the U.K. The agency sent the rule to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs April 9.

U.S. officials last month said they're working under an April 20 deadline to complete the exemption, which is expected to reduce ITAR licensing burdens for defense trade as part of the AUKUS partnership (see 2404010041). The Bureau of Industry and Security has drafted a similar rule (see 2404080014).
