Lawmakers Seek More Information on Curbing Illegal Gun Exports to Caribbean

Four congressional Democrats announced last week that they introduced a bill that would require DOJ to provide an annual report to Congress on its efforts to curb illicit firearm sales from the U.S. to the Caribbean, including Haiti, which is increasingly plagued by "violent gangs."

The legislation would "improve transparency and accountability within U.S. anti-trafficking efforts," said Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-Texas, who introduced the bill with Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, D-Fla., and Sens. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., and Tim Kaine, D-Va. The proposed Caribbean Arms Trafficking Causing Harm Act, or CATCH Act, was referred to the House and Senate Judiciary committees.
