Census Offers Tips for Carrier ID, Shipping Weight Errors in AES

The Census Bureau emailed tips this week on how to address the most frequent messages generated this month in the Automated Export System.

Response code 118 is a fatal error for when the Carrier ID, including the Standard Carrier Alpha Code (SCAC) or the International Air Transport Association (IATA) code, is missing. Census said the Carrier ID identifies the carrier that transports the goods out of the U.S., and the SCAC is used for vessel, rail, and truck shipments, while the IATA code is used for air shipments. The filer should verify the Carrier ID and transport mode, correct the shipment and resubmit.

Response code 649 is another fatal error for when the filing's listed quantity doesn't align with the shipping weight. Census said this issue arises when the "Unit of Measure 1" for the reported Schedule B/Harmonized Tariff Schedule "requires kilograms," but the listed "Quantity 1" exceeds the shipping weight. The filer should verify Quantity 1, the shipping weight, correct the shipment and resubmit.
