Treasury Speaks With Aid Groups About Houthi Designation

Senior Treasury Department official Brian Nelson met this week with nongovernmental organizations, international organizations and others to discuss the U.S. designation of the Yemen-based Houthis as a terrorist organization, which will take effect next month and subject the group to strict financial sanctions (see 2401170025).

Nelson, undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, heard from NGOs about the “importance of engagement with the commercial sector” to ensure Yemeni people can continue to import food, medicine and receive humanitarian aid. Nelson “committed to work proactively with the private sector and humanitarian actors to preserve these activities,” Treasury said.
