House Democrats Propose Scaling Back Sanctions on Latin America
Rep. Nydia Velazquez, D-N.Y., has introduced a resolution aimed at improving U.S. relations with Latin America, including by ending all unilateral economic sanctions imposed on the region by executive order.
The resolution, unveiled on Dec. 21, also calls on the administration to work with Congress to end all unilateral sanctions mandated by law for Latin America, including the economic embargo on Cuba.
Velazquez said the U.S. needs to “move past an outdated and ineffective foreign policy strategy” that has favored intervention in Latin American affairs.
The resolution is co-sponsored by Democratic Reps. Delia Ramirez of Illinois, Greg Casar of Texas, Jesús García of Illinois, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York.
