Ex-FBI Agent Looking to Change Plea in Sanctions Case, Court Order Says

The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York set a plea proceeding for former FBI agent Charles McGonigal in a case charging him with violating U.S. sanctions on Russia. Judge Jennifer Rearden set the Aug. 15 proceeding on word that McGonigal "may wish to enter" a guilty plea (U.S. v. Charles McGonigal, S.D.N.Y. # 23-00016).

McGonigal was charged in January with trying to provide services to sanctioned Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska (see 2301230030). While working as former special agent in charge of the New York FBI counterintelligence division, McGonigal oversaw the investigations of oligarchs, including Deripaska, who was sanctioned in 2018.
