BIS Suspends Export Privileges of 2 People After Illegal Weapons Exports

The Bureau of Industry and Security last week revoked export privileges for two people after they illegally exported firearms and other items from the U.S.

Tyler James Sumlin of Florida was convicted Sept. 11, 2019, after he tried to smuggle silencers, a short barreled rifle and a “destructive device” to Mexico, BIS said. Sumlin was sentenced to five years' probation, a $100 assessment and a $150 criminal fine. BIS suspended Sumlin’s export privileges for seven years from the conviction date.

Victor Thomas Diaz, an inmate at a California prison, was convicted April 18, 2022, of conspiring to deal firearms without a license, BIS said. Diaz was sentenced to two years' “confinement,” three years of supervised release and a $200 assessment. BIS suspended Diaz’s export privileges for 10 years from the conviction date.
