Intelligence, Defense Officials Brief Senate on AI National Security

The Senate held a classified briefing on AI’s national security implications Tuesday. National Intelligence Director Avril Haines, Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks and others from defense and intelligence agencies briefed senators. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said the briefing is “crucial” because national security “may well be the most consequential” of AI issues. It was the second AI briefing hosted by Schumer. He said about 70 senators attended the first briefing, which focused on the technology’s capabilities, applications, limitations and challenges (see 2306130056).
