USTR Holds Video Call With EU Official, Spanish Commerce Minister

U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai talked with European Commission Executive Vice-President Margrethe Vestager about developing a more positive and productive trade relationship with the European Union. They agreed to work together on shared objectives related to large non-market economies, such as China, and on trade policy support for climate change goals.

She also spoke with Spain's Industry and Commerce Minister Maria Reyes Maroto, and spoke about the effect of global excess steel and aluminum capacity, and Spain's digital services tax. The U.S. has 25% tariffs on Spanish steel to combat excess steel production; it has proposed up to 25% tariffs on $155 million in Spanish exports over the DST. On both topics, they agreed they want to find "mutually beneficial outcomes."
