US to Impose More Iran Sanctions, Trump Says

The U.S. will impose further sanctions against Iran in response to its recent missile attacks on a U.S. military base in Iraq, President Donald Trump said Jan. 8. Trump called the measures “punishing economic sanctions,” which will “remain until Iran changes its behavior,” including abandoning its pursuit of nuclear weapons. Details of the sanctions were not immediately released.

Trump also called on Britain, Germany, France, Russia and China to abandon the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action and work with the U.S. on a new nuclear deal with Iran. “They must not break away from the remnants of the Iran deal,” Trump said. “We must all work together toward making a deal with Iran that makes the world a safer and more peaceful place.” Trump’s comments came days after he threatened sanctions against Iraq and as Iran further decommitted from its obligations under the JCPOA (see 2001060048).
