CPSC Considering Ban on Children's Products, Furniture, Electronic Devices Containing Flame Retardant

The Consumer Product Safety Commission is considering whether to implement a ban on the use of organohalogen flame retardants in certain products, it said (here) after receiving a petition from several consumer advocacy and medical associations. Earthjustice, the Consumer Federation of America, the American Academy of Pediatrics and Consumers Union, among others, requested the CPSC declare any children’s products, upholstered furniture, mattress or mattress pad or electronic device containing organohalogen flame retardants to be “banned hazardous substances” under the Federal Hazardous Substances Act. Comments on the petition are due Oct. 19.
